The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Youth Assembly of Nigeria (YAN) has constituted an 11 member National Convention Planning Committee and directed the immediate commencement of sub national electioneering processes ahead of the organisation’s national convention.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by the Board on Saturday at the YAN National Headquarters in Abuja.
According to the statement, the committee was constituted in line with Article 4, Subsection 8 of the YAN Constitution (2024 as amended) to ensure a transparent, inclusive and credible national convention.
The Board, which described itself as the highest decision making organ of the Assembly, said members of the committee were drawn from the six geopolitical zones of the country to coordinate all activities leading to the convention.
The committee is chaired by Rt. Hon. Samuel Godstime Chukwubuikem, while Rt. Hon. Shuaibu Sani will serve as secretary.
Other members are Rt. Hon. Oluwasegun Famuyibo National, Prince Mohammed Sani Hassan, Amb. Muhammadu Bello Dabai, Amb. Albert Ezenwata Nwangwu, Amb. Henry Ejiroghene, Alh. Esinrogunjo Musbau, Amb. Adeyelu Samuel Oluwadamilare, Amb. Charles Ezeaniekwe and Rt. Hon. Habiba Umar Iliyasu.
The Board said the committee has been mandated to develop the framework for the convention by proposing its theme, date, venue and overall structure.
It will also prepare a detailed budget and resource mobilisation strategy in collaboration with the National Secretariat and other stakeholders, oversee logistics, accommodation, accreditation, security, media and delegates’ welfare, as well as coordinate nationwide mobilisation of state chapters and partners to ensure broad participation.
Other responsibilities include drafting the convention agenda, compiling reports and documentation, serving as the liaison between the Board of Trustees, National Principal Officers, state chapters and external partners, constituting and supervising sub committees where necessary, ensuring compliance with the YAN Constitution, Electoral Guidelines and Board directives, and submitting periodic progress reports as well as a final report with recommendations to the Board.
As part of preparations for the convention, the Board also directed the National Deputy Speaker, in consultation with the National Speaker, to immediately constitute Returning Officers for all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the Board, the Returning Officers will be responsible for conducting and supervising all state level electioneering activities in accordance with the YAN Constitution and Electoral Guidelines ahead of the national convention.
The Board said the process should begin without delay to allow adequate preparations across the states.
It further charged the National Convention Planning Committee and the National Deputy Speaker to carry out their responsibilities with diligence, transparency and unity of purpose to ensure a credible convention that reflects the aspirations of Nigerian youths.
The Board also called on members, state chapters, stakeholders and development partners to support the committee and the Returning Officers throughout the convention process.
