Fresh outrage has erupted in Zamfara State following a suspected bomb explosion along the Yar’Tasha–Dansadau road in Maru Local Government Area, an attack that has left many travellers feared dead and deepened public anger over the worsening security situation in the state.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on Saturday, involved an unspecified number of commuters who were caught in the blast while travelling through the volatile axis, an area long plagued by banditry and terrorist activity.
Although casualty figures remain unclear, the Zamfara State Police Command confirmed the explosion. The Police Public Relations Officer, Yazid Abubakar, told journalists that security operatives were still gathering details.
“I can confirm that there was a blast in that area, but the incident just happened. I can’t tell you details yet. I will update you later,” Abubakar said.
Videos circulating on social media shortly after the explosion showed chaotic scenes, with travellers fleeing in panic as damaged vehicles littered the road. The footage has further fuelled public outrage and renewed criticism of the state government’s handling of security.
For many residents, the latest attack reinforces a growing belief that Zamfara has effectively become a haven for terrorists, with citizens left vulnerable and unprotected. Critics argue that insecurity has worsened steadily over the past 2 years, despite repeated assurances from the government.
Public anger has also been amplified by claims that Governor Dauda Lawal has been out of the state for close to 3 weeks on vacation while violence escalates across several local government areas. Though the government has not officially confirmed the duration of his absence, the perception of a leadership vacuum has intensified frustration among residents.
“The people have lost hope,” a community leader in Maru said. “Our roads are death traps. Villages are attacked regularly, and now travellers are being bombed. It feels like there is no government.”
On social media platform X, reactions poured in following reports of the blast. One user, Nuhu Sada, wrote: “Another tragic attack on innocent travelers in Zamfara. Families are grieving, lives are lost, and property destroyed. Security agencies must act quickly to prevent further harm and bring those responsible to justice.”
Beyond public lamentations, political pressure is also mounting. Civil society groups and concerned citizens have begun openly questioning Governor Lawal’s capacity to govern the state amid the escalating violence. Some have gone as far as calling for the declaration of a state of emergency, arguing that normal governance structures have failed to contain the crisis.
Security analysts warn that without urgent, coordinated intervention from both state and federal authorities, attacks like the Yar’Tasha–Dansadau explosion could become more frequent, further isolating communities and crippling economic activities.
As Zamfara mourns yet another violent incident, residents say what they urgently need is not rhetoric, but visible leadership, decisive action, and a clear strategy to reclaim the state from armed groups that now operate with alarming boldness.
