Concerns have been raised over the Federal Government’s reported decision to waive trillions of naira allegedly owed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to the Federation, amid the introduction of new tax measures affecting ordinary Nigerians.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, the National President of the Nigerian Youth Unions’ Government, also known as the Emerging Leaders Forum of Nigeria, Ambassador Godstime Chukwubuikem Samuel, described the development as disturbing and unfair to citizens already burdened by economic hardship.
According to him, approving the waiver of huge institutional debts while expecting poor Nigerians to shoulder additional tax obligations contradicts the principles of equity and accountability promised by the current administration.
Ambassador Samuel said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must remain accountable to the Nigerian people, stressing that governance should prioritise fairness and transparency, especially during difficult economic times.
He recalled that shortly after assuming office, President Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidy, a policy decision that significantly increased the cost of living across the country. He noted that the subsidy removal triggered sharp rises in fuel prices, transportation costs, food prices, and other essential goods, worsening the economic conditions faced by millions of Nigerians.
The youth leader argued that while fiscal reforms may be necessary, government must first address revenue leakages and ensure that powerful institutions fulfil their financial obligations before imposing new taxes on citizens.
He warned that policies perceived to favour government-owned entities at the expense of ordinary Nigerians could erode public trust and confidence in governance.
Ambassador Samuel therefore called on the Federal Government to reconsider its approach, ensure greater fiscal discipline within government institutions, and adopt economic policies that reflect shared sacrifice and social justice.
He urged the administration to prioritise the welfare of Nigerians, particularly the poor and vulnerable, while pursuing reforms aimed at stabilising the economy.
