The National leadership of the Nigerian Youth Unions Government, led by Ambassador Godstime Chukwubuikem Samuel, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Zamfara State, citing worsening insecurity and repeated attacks on military formations in the North-West.
Speaking after addressing youths in the Federal Capital Territory ahead of the upcoming council area elections, Godstime said the continued attacks by terrorists — including reported destruction of Nigerian military equipment — had become a “national embarrassment” that requires urgent and decisive intervention.
According to him, emergency rule would enable the Nigerian military to take stronger and more coordinated action to stamp out terrorism in Zamfara and the wider North-West region.
He criticised the administration of Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, alleging that security in the state has deteriorated under his leadership.
“The security of the people of Zamfara State continues to be threatened. The situation demands immediate and extraordinary measures,” Godstime said.
He further disclosed that youths in Zamfara had, on several occasions, sought approval to defend themselves by any means necessary. He warned that if citizens resort to self-help, it could signal a broader failure of governance at all levels.
“If that happens, it will portray the entire leadership of Nigeria as failing in its primary responsibility to protect lives and property,” he stated.
Godstime argued that it was time for Governor Lawal to “give way,” suggesting that a coordinated administrator with a strong security background should be appointed to restore order and stabilise the state.
“It is time for fresh ideas and firm action to swiftly address the security challenges confronting Zamfara,” he added.
Zamfara State has in recent years faced persistent attacks from armed groups, with communities repeatedly targeted despite ongoing military operations in the region.
