The National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL) has commended the National Assembly and President Tinubu for their “decisive, patriotic, and constitutionally responsible” action in the swift passage and signing into law of the amended Electoral Act.
In a statement, the Forum described the intervention as more than a routine legislative exercise, calling it a “bold reaffirmation of Nigeria’s commitment to constitutional democracy, institutional stability, and the rule of law.” According to the NFFL, the timely enactment of the law ensures that the legal framework governing elections is strengthened well ahead of the electoral cycle, protecting both the sovereignty of the people and the integrity of the ballot.
The Forum highlighted that the Electoral Act serves as the backbone of Nigeria’s democratic process. Its prompt enactment, they said, eliminates legal ambiguities and provides the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with a firm statutory foundation to organise, regulate, and conduct elections in strict compliance with constitutional provisions and international best practices.
“As former custodians of legislative authority and defenders of democratic governance, we recognize that credible elections are the lifeblood of any democratic nation,” the statement read. “The swift action taken by the National Assembly and the President has preserved institutional continuity, strengthened electoral credibility, and reinforced public trust in Nigeria’s democratic system.”
The Forum also noted that the development sends a clear signal that Nigeria’s democracy is resilient, functional, and guided by leadership that respects constitutional order and electoral timelines. It reassures citizens, political stakeholders, and the international community that Nigeria remains firmly on the path of democratic consolidation and political stability.
The NFFL urged all political parties, aspirants, institutions, and stakeholders to respect both the letter and spirit of the Electoral Act, warning that democracy can only thrive where rules are followed, institutions are protected, and the will of the people is upheld.
The Forum reaffirmed its commitment to defending democratic values, strengthening constitutional governance, and supporting all lawful efforts aimed at ensuring peaceful, transparent, and credible elections nationwide.
